Distracted motorists detected, South Australia

Police caught 291 inattentive drivers over the seven days of the recent Operation Fatal Distraction.

Focusing on mobile phone use and other behaviours that take driver attention away from the road, the operation ran across the state from Monday 7 November until Sunday 13 November.

During the previous Operation Fatal Distraction in August this year, there were 219 drivers detected for a distraction offence.

Superintendent Bob Gray, Officer in Charge Traffic Services Branch said each of these distracted drivers represents a significant risk on the roads.

“It is easy to look at numbers like this and forget the risk that sits behind them. A quick moment of looking at a phone or even other moments of distraction can result in catastrophic consequences, a lifetime of regret and a hefty expiation notice ,” Supt Gray said.

“There is absolutely no excuse to use your phone while operating a car and if it can’t wait, pull over. Even though Operation Fatal Distraction is now over, police will continue to target distracted drivers “
