The communities in our shire are never stronger than in times of crisis and a new program aims to funnel grant funding into helping these existing, crucial networks.

Kempsey Shire Council will this month launch the Better Together Network – a year-round program that directs the right information and resources, in the right way, to the right people in Stuarts Point and the local area.

Funded by Resilience NSW it will enable every Macleay community to be better prepared for disaster and more open to opportunities.

Through the Network, Council and other service providers will inform and listen to the best and most trusted voices. Those already established in the community. The local leaders who have their finger on the pulse. Those who understand what their village needs in times of distress and how they could best take advantage of an opportunity.

Is that you?

The Better Together Network will be hosting meetings in the coming months, kicking off with workshops to introduce the idea and start to map out community assets, discuss ideas to improve communication and identify a local network the locals can rely on.

Kempsey Shire Council Manager Community Partnerships, Lyndal Harper, said anyone who thinks they might be interested in helping or just want to know more about the Better Together Network should come along.

“There are key people in every village in our shire who become the central reference point in times of need and the Better Together Network will develop ways to improve the flow of information to and from them,” said Ms Harper.

“The numerous natural disasters we have all experienced have prompted us to rethink the way we share information before, during and after these events. Whether it is identifying the key need for a community or recognising an opportunity to help their village, we want residents to speak up and become ambassadors for their communities to help.”
