Dogs are all ears at Hastings Library

A very special story time is returning to Hastings Library. Instead of being read to, children are encouraged to read aloud to a new furry friend.

Mel, our new story dog, is nonjudgmental and doesn’t mind if a child stumbles over a word or two. She merely listens attentively and encourages children to continue reading with tail wags and the occasional lick. This offers children the confidence to practice reading in a calm and supportive environment, without the fear of being graded or critiqued.

The accepting, loving nature of dogs gives this program its magic and helps children to relax, open up, do their best, and have fun while reading to a friendly, calm dog.

Story Dogs has many advantages, such as building confidence and enhancing children’s reading abilities. It’s also a great way to encourage reluctant readers to pick up a book. If they know they get to spend some time with a fury friend, they may be more willing to give reading a chance.

If your child loves dogs and needs a little extra help with their reading, this could be the program for them. Children will be allocated a time slot between 4pm and 5.30pm on Wednesdays throughout Term 2.

To be eligible for the program, children must be able to attend Hastings Library weekly throughout the school term and be aged between 7-10 years.
