The immediate past President of AMA ACT, Dr Kerrie Aust, has today been awarded the AMA’s Women in Medical Leadership Award for her dedication to the well-being of fellow doctors.
Federal AMA President Dr Danielle McMullen said Dr Aust had demonstrated exemplary leadership, compassion, and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by medical professionals.
“As medical director of Drs4Drs, Dr Aust has provided invaluable resources, support services, and advocacy initiatives aimed at promoting the physical, mental, and emotional health of physicians,” Dr McMullen said.
“Dr Aust was also tireless in her role as AMA ACT President and is a true asset to the medical profession.”
Drs4Drs provides a vital network of doctors’ health advisory and referral services, offering independent, free, safe, supportive, and confidential support for doctors and medical students. Under Dr Aust’s guidance, this network has become a lifeline for countless medical professionals, offering a safe space where they can seek guidance, support, and resources without fear of judgment or stigma.
Current AMA ACT President Dr Betty Ge said that in addition to her leadership role, Dr Aust had generously volunteered her time, taking phone calls after hours in case of emergencies for Drs4Drs.
“This selfless commitment ensures that medical professionals have access to support and assistance whenever they need it, further underscoring Dr Aust’s dedication to the well-being of her colleagues,” Dr Ge said.
“Dr Aust’s leadership as AMA ACT President and her advocacy for addressing the unique mental health challenges faced by medical professionals highlight her commitment to advancing the well-being of the medical community.”
Dr Aust said she was honoured to receive the award and grateful to the AMA for continuing to invest in leadership and mentoring opportunities for women in medicine.
“I have personally benefited from the leadership opportunities that the AMA has provide since my time at medical school through to the incredible support of the ACT and federal teams during my time as ACT President,” she said.
“Stepping into leadership provided me with one of the greatest experiences of my career. It is a gift to be able to give back to our profession.
“We need to continue to support women, break down the barriers and remind them that they do have the ability to be exceptional leaders.”
