Memories of yesteryear will come flooding back when drive-in cinema makes its return to Hobart this weekend.
Three family-friendly feature-length films will be shown over three nights on a 10m-wide outdoor screen at the Regatta Grounds as part of the City of Hobart’s Out in the Open program.
The three-night program will kick off with Australian classic Strictly Ballroom: the story of a maverick dancer who just wants to dance his own steps, forging his own path against the odds, against family pressure and in a rigid structure that considers his showy moves as “flashy, crowd pleasing steps”.
On Saturday, the animated adventure Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon will take audiences along a journey to save Mossy Bottom Farm from an alien invasion.
Finally, the much-loved Tm Burton masterpiece Edward Scissorhands will round out the weekend on Sunday evening.
Gates open at 6.30pm for 7.30pm screening on Friday and Saturday evenings. With darkness falling an hour earlier following the end of daylight savings, Sunday’s film starts at 6.30pm, with gates opening at 5.30pm.
“This is a great opportunity to get your family or friends together and drive in, pull up, and sit back to enjoy a movie in our great Hobart outdoors,” Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.
“The movie night is one part of the Out in the Open program, which is encouraging people to get involved in outdoor activities that bring our community together in a COVID-safe way.”
Food vans will offer a range of cinema favourites including popcorn, Jaffas and ice creams, as well as non-alcoholic drinks and other snacks, or movie-goers can bring their own picnic supper.
Admission is free but space is limited and will be allocated on a first-in, first-served basis.
Parking attendants will be dressed up to add to the nostalgia and introduce younger generations to the magic of the drive-in era.
