Dumping of animal carcasses on public land

Swan Hill Rural City Council has received a number of complaints about animal carcasses, predominately wild pigs, being dumped on public land and road reserves around Robinvale.

Acting Mayor Cr Bill Moar said that dumping of the unwanted deceased animals has become hazardous for road users and the agricultural industry.

“There is a biosecurity risk that is posed to our domestic livestock is immense” Cr Moar said.

“The threat of foot and mouth disease entering our domestic livestock industry is very real. Our farmers do not need the extra stress of carcasses lying around their properties and increasing this risk.”

People who are wanting to dispose of any animal carcasses, including skins, are advised to dispose of them at their local licensed landfill.

Council and other land managers are investigating instances of dumped carcasses on public land and may proceed with enforcement action, including prosecutions.

Members of the public are encouraged to report the dumping of carcasses to Councils Regulatory Services team on 03 5036 2333.
