Earth Day, celebrated on April 22, serves as a reminder of our responsibility to protect the environment. It also highlights the connection between environmental sustainability, health, and well-being.

Contaminated air, water, and food continue to pose global health risks, with climate change only exacerbating these concerns. Extreme weather events, like floods and fires, can not only cause direct harm but also disrupt health infrastructure, increasing the vulnerability of individuals with life-limiting conditions.

Palliative care, which focuses on improving the quality of life for patients with life-limiting conditions, is deeply intertwined with environmental factors. A strong component of this care is the therapeutic benefit of nature and the environment, offering peace and comfort, providing emotional and spiritual relief during challenging times.

Organisations like Ambulance Wish make it possible for individuals with life-limiting-conditions to experience nature and create meaningful memories in their final year of life. These acts emphasise the importance of connecting with the environment for well-being.

This Earth Day, let’s remember that caring for the environment is intertwined with caring for each other, ensuring that everyone can experience peace, comfort, and connection.

This photo from Ambulance Wish WA shows a “wish” being granted, offering individuals with life-limiting conditions the chance to connect with the environment and create lasting memories. It’s a powerful example of how palliative care and nature can enhance quality of life.
