Electoral information in language

As the country gears up to vote in the federal election, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has produced informative videos in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.

As the country gears up to vote in the federal election, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has produced informative videos in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.

These include Alyawarra, Anindilyakwa, Arrernte, Burarra, Murrinh Patha, Ndjebanna, Pintupi Luritja, Pitjanjatjarra, Tiwi, Walpiri and Yolngu Matha.

A great initiative during the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages, the videos aim to encourage and support participation in the election.

The AEC’s Northern Territory Manager, Geoff Bloom, said the videos were created to raise awareness in remote communities about the importance of voting.

‘The majority of people who vote with our remote mobile polling teams live in the Northern Territory and are part of small Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities,’ Geoff said.

‘These videos give information on how to enrol, how to vote and also promote temporary employment opportunities.’
