Emergency crews responding to fire – Bicentennial Road in Katherine

A fire in the vicinity of Bicentennial Road has spread to the area at the rear of the Katherine Showgrounds igniting a wall of tyres located on the boundary of the site.

There is a significant amount of smoke which prevailing winds are pushing towards Katherine South. Katherine Fire Station, Northern Territory Police and Katherine Town Council are working together to control and extinguish the fire.

Tyre fires create large amounts of thick black smoke and can be difficult to extinguish. Smoke from a tyre fire contains a number of substances that may cause health issues. Smoke may cause, amongst other symptoms, a burning feeling in your eyes and throat irritation. The public are asked to avoid this area where possible. If you live or work nearby, stay indoors, reduce reverse cycle air-conditioning and reduce physical activity. Keep windows and doors closed.

The Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority (NT EPA) and the Department of Health have been advised of the incident.

Please note the cause of fire is unknown at this time.
