Empowering remote community workers to respond to sexual violence

RMIT

A new course is giving workers in remote communities the skills they need to recognise and respond to sexual violence.

Social workers and other community services workers from the Tiwi Islands, Alice Springs and other parts of the Northern Territory recently met in Darwin for training that will help them better assist victim/survivors of sexual violence.

The course, Recognising and Responding to Sexual Violence, aims to equip practitioners with responses that prevent re-traumatisation, promote recovery and reduce the risk of re-victimisation.

Course facilitator Jason Rostant said the Northern Territory cohort came from a range of backgrounds that would benefit from this training.

“Many of the participants have significant experience working in family and sexual violence contexts including in women’s legal services, specialist counselling services, victims of crime services, in disability, youth, alcohol and other drugs and mental health settings,” he said.

“They work across extensive areas within the Northern Territory and in isolated and remote communities.”
