Energy retailer calls for government to mandate carbon neutral energy by 2025

Amidst alarming climate change stories being reported every day, one Australian energy retailer has called on the government to mandate carbon neutral energy for the energy sector by 2025.

Tango Energy, the retail arm of 100% renewable energy provider, Pacific Hydro Australia (PHA), is set to go carbon neutral in 2020 and believes with the dramatic rate of climate change, Australia must urgently transition to carbon neutral energy.

‘We’re at a stage now where the climate situation is so dire, decisive action needs to be taken on the energy that powers our nation,’ said Domenic Capomolla, CEO of Tango Energy.

‘We’re fortunately at a stage now where the energy sector can provide an abundance of power from renewable sources at affordable rates.

‘There’s no longer a trade-off between cheap versus green energy. And to encourage the use of more renewable energy, we’re calling on the government to mandate carbon-neutral energy by 2025 for the Australian energy sector,’ said Mr Capomolla.

By 2020, there will be only two energy retailers in Australia offering carbon-neutral energy as a standard product.

Tango Energy’s business model is to reinvest revenue it generates on the retail side back into more renewable energy projects through its generation parent, PHA.

PHA is a 100% renewable energy provider and currently has 15 renewable projects in development or operation across Australia – including wind farms, solar farms and hydro plants – with more projects in the pipeline.

‘The more revenue Tango Energy generates as a retail business, the more we can pump back into renewable energy projects in a virtuous circle,’ said Mr Capomolla.

‘PHA has developed the Crowlands windfarm near Ararat, which has been underwritten by a power purchasing scheme involving 14 organisations.

‘But it’s more than a nice idea. The economies of scale in the renewable sector are now delivering massive savings and affordability,’ said Mr Capomolla.

Tango Energy has taken the energy sector by storm in recent years, winning the Canstar Blue award for Most Satisfied Customers – Electricity Providers in 2018.

In the last 18 months, it has grown from 20,000 customers to over 70,000 without having ramped up its marketing. When asked to define Tango’s business model, Mr Capomolla described Tango as an environmental price warrior.

‘Tango is the fastest growing energy retailer, growing 300% in the last 18 months on the back of affordable power and our unique business model,’ said Mr Capomolla.

‘And while it’s great that Tango can offer all its customers carbon-neutral products from 2020, we believe that needs to be standard for every energy retailer.

‘Unlike Kermit, we say it is easy being green and we’re calling on the government to make carbon-neutral energy mandatory for energy retailers by 2025,’ said Mr Capomolla.
