Engineers appointed to construct South-West school sports oval

  • Architect appointed for $6.27 million construction of new sports oval and associated infrastructure at Margaret River Senior High School
  • New facilities for the school’s 1,100 students
  • The project will support 22 new jobs
  • Construction expected to start in early 2021
  • Engineering firm Arup has been selected to construct an oval and associated facilities at Margaret River Senior High School which will provide the school’s 1,100 students with a new space for sports.

Currently, students are using Margaret River’s community oval for physical education so the project will allow students to remain on school grounds for sport and other recreational activities.

The $6.27 million facility will include an oval, nearby basketball court and cricket nets. There will also be terraced seating for spectators, pathways and a sports storage shed.

With the project now in the design stage, construction is expected to start in early 2021 with completion expected in October 2021.

This investment is part of the McGowan Government’s $28 million South West Recovery Plan to upgrade five Western Australian public schools in the region.

As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

“Physical education is an important part of every child’s education.

“I’m pleased this investment in Margaret River Senior High School will allow students to stay at school for physical education and other recreational activities, and I know staff, students and their families will enjoy these facilities for years to come.

“Our recovery plan will help drive economic and social recovery across the State, and create a pipeline of jobs for Western Australians.”

As stated by South West Region MLC Sally Talbot:

“It is great news that the new oval at Margaret River Senior High School is starting to take shape.

“I have spoken to students who have been disappointed their classroom time is cut short due to the travel time to the community oval.

“This oval will mean students can participate in physical education on school grounds and will be enjoyed for years to come.

“It is also great news for the community, creating 22 new jobs.”
