Ensuring strong response to Alice Springs storm

NT Government

The NT Government response remains in place following the severe storm which caused damage across parts of Alice Springs on Saturday.

Around 5:40 pm strong winds struck a corridor through Alice Springs, including the suburbs of Larapinta, Araluen, Gillen, The Gap and Desert Springs, uprooting trees, cutting power and causing damage to homes and vehicles.

Late Sunday, around 80 homes remained without power.

A number of classrooms at Yipirinya School have been severely damaged, and several trees of cultural significance at the school have been felled.

Education Department officials have already been onsite and will work with the school to make the playgrounds safe, and to ensure classes can resume as soon as possible.

The Alice Springs Emergency Operations Centre has been stood up with an incident management team across government agencies working to make sure that the community is safe and to get services back on line in the shortest possible time.

No one has been seriously injured but the public is urged to continue to show caution around the potential of fallen power lines or unstable trees.

In an emergency people should call 000. Other key contact numbers include:
