Local First Nations artists and community members are invited to enter the annual competition, with the winners announced during NAIDOC Week (3-10 July).
“The NAIDOC Art Competition is a great opportunity to showcase the rich culture and artistic talent here in the Clarence Valley,” Mayor Ian Tiley said.
“Clarence Valley Council is a strong supporter of celebrating our First Nations community and to recognise this we will be flying last year’s competition winner on a flag at the Council chambers during NAIDOC Week.”
The national theme for NAIDOC Week 2022 is Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! However, artworks do not need to fit into the annual NAIDOC theme, and can be any topic of choice.
“Yaegl artist Aneika Kapeen’s amazing artwork Rebirth, which depicts the land after the 2019-20 bushfires, will be displayed on flagpoles throughout the Clarence as the 2021 winner,” CVC Community Engagement Officer Sheilah Hure said.
“The 2022 senior winner will be used on NAIDOC street flags and other promotional material for NAIDOC Week 2023.”
The following prizes will be awarded at a morning tea at New School of Arts, South Grafton between 11am and 1pm on Tuesday, 5 July 2022:
- Senior (18+): 1st – $500, 2nd – $250, 3rd – $150.
- Junior (5-17 yrs): 1st – $70 art pack, 2nd – $50 at pack, 3rd – $30 art pack.
All artists are invited to attend the morning tea and view the winning junior and senior artworks.

The judging panel consists of local First Nations and Council representatives.
