Escape from lawful custody in Ravenshoe, QLD

Police are seeking assistance to locate a man that escaped from police custody this afternoon in Ravenshoe.

The 25-year-old man had been arrested earlier in the afternoon in relation to serious sexual assault offences and was taken by officers to the Ravenshoe Police Station where he was being transitioned into a more secure vehicle for transport to the Mareeba Watchhouse.

As this transition was occuring at 1.45pm, the man fled from police and was last seen running into nearby bushland.

Police chased the man and established cordons as well as assistance from the dog squad.

An extensive search of the area, hampered by heavy rain in the area, has failed to locate the man.

The man is described as Caucasian in appearance, around 175 cm tall and has a proportionate build.

He was last seen wearing bright yellow shorts, a green and grey tshirt and was handcuffed at the front.

Anyone who has seen the man is being urged to NOT approach him and call police immediately.

Police would also like residents in the Ravenshoe area to report anything that seems suspicious to them.

Investigations are continuing.
