Exciting milestone for Festival Plaza Redevelopment

The new Station Road beside the Festival Plaza Redevelopment is just weeks away from opening to the public and will coincide with the completion of SkyCity’s expansion connecting the Adelaide Casino with Festival Plaza.

The landscaping of Station Road is the first stage of the Marshall Government’s $213 million upgrade to the Festival Plaza Public Realm.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Corey Wingard said the works are forming part of a much larger project that’s supporting 785 jobs.

“This redevelopment is set to become Adelaide’s premier events and open public space in the heart of the Riverbank Precinct,” Minister Wingard said.

“As well as transforming the plaza into a world-class event space with better opportunities to attract a variety of events, the project is also getting South Australians into work.”

“Station Road will provide access to North Terrace, the casino and the southern entrance to Adelaide Railway Station and will be a critical connection for the thousands of people accessing the Riverbank Precinct.”

The Station Road works are being delivered by Hansen Yuncken with landscaping being undertaken by local South Australian business Outside Ideas.

Outside Ideas have successfully delivered landscaping works on other iconic South Australian projects, including the Adelaide Oval Redevelopment and Torrens Road to River Torrens Project.

The works along Station Road include:

  • Construction of dual escalators on the northern side of the station entry stairs, next to the Dunstan Playhouse;
  • Provision of infrastructure to support activation of the Public Realm for events including power and feature lighting;
  • Paving and re-landscaping to the area between the Adelaide Festival Centre and Dunstan Playhouse shells;
  • Additional security bollards; and
  • Station entry concourse fitout.

Public access along Station Road will be available from mid-November ahead of the opening of the SkyCity Adelaide Casino.

Signage will be in place to assist pedestrians through the area.

Access via the Station Entry concourse is expected to be available at the end of November 2020, ahead of the cricket season at Adelaide Oval in December 2020.

All of the Station Road works are expected to be completed at the end of March 2021, weather permitting.

Works on the Walker Corporation’s Carpark Redevelopment are continuing, with completion expected in mid 2021.

The Festival Plaza Public Realm is one of three major projects forming part of the Festival Plaza Redevelopment, which involves close to $1 billion in both private and publicly funded investment in and around the Riverbank Precinct.

Once complete, the new Festival Plaza will be used for gatherings and events hosting up to thousands of people which will be a huge boost for tourism, businesses and local jobs
