Exciting opportunity for community-led Moon Festival

Chinese Lanterns at Moon Festival

Monash Council is excited to announce funding for an all-new community-led Moon Festival, to take place in early September 2022.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, is a traditional festival dating back over 3,000 years.

The festival corresponds to mid-September when the moon is at its brightest and fullest size. In 2022, this date will be 10 September.

Council is seeking Expressions of Interest from an Incorporated Body or Not for Profit organisations to deliver the Moon Festival in 2022.

Applications are now open and close on Monday 1 August 2022, with $63,500 in funding available.

Applicants will be required to:

  • Deliver a one-night event that celebrates Mid-Autumn Festival for the Monash community, to be located within the City of Monash between 8 September to 11 September 2022.
  • Support a high level of participation, both through audience attendance and content delivery.
  • Celebrate diversity and inclusion within our community. The event will be a positive opportunity for the community to celebrate the diverse cultures that are represented by the people living in Monash. Events should encourage respect and a greater understanding of each other.
  • Create opportunities to showcase local artistic content.
  • Support COVIDSafe practices for the delivery of events.

Mayor Stuart James said the Moon Festival was in line with Council’s ongoing commitment to embrace social inclusion, connection, community identity, celebration and the sharing of diversity and understanding.

“The City of Monash is a linguistically and culturally diverse city with residents from 106 countries, speaking 84 languages. Our strength as a city is in our diversity and our residents bring with them their culture, traditions, food, music, dance and so much more,” Cr James said.

“We’re proud of our ongoing commitment to celebrating the many diverse cultures in Monash and look forward to working with a local community group to deliver this exciting event to the Monash community.”
