Experience a vintage Christmas at Bankfoot House

Sunshine Coast Council

This holiday season, experience a time gone by as we reminisce about what Christmas would have been like for three generations of the family who called Bankfoot House home for 134 years.

The free Christmas at Bankfoot House exhibition, opening on November 30, showcases special festive objects which had previously been held in the remarkable heritage collection store.

Heritage Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski encouraged families to pack a picnic and enjoy a wonderful family day out.

“What better way to appreciate the simpler things this festive season,” Cr Baberowski said.

“As a part of this special exhibition you can hear Christmas Carols from the 1920s being played on the pianola, see the original Bankfoot House Christmas card collection, with unique handwritten cards dating from as early as 1891, family Christmas photos and we’ve even set the dining room for Christmas lunch using serving wear from the collection.”

In addition to the exhibition, Bankfoot House will host a special, one-off live radio play performance of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, on Friday, December 13 from 4pm.

The Drama Merchant will bring this holiday classic to life as a live 1940s radio broadcast, complete with vintage commercials, costumes, props, musical underscoring and the magic of live sound effects.

This fun, interactive performance will have you brimming with Christmas cheer, singing your favourite carols or participating with the cast as a sound effects artist.

A Sherlock Holmes Christmas story will also be included in this 1.5hr family show.

Free tours of Bankfoot House and the Mary Grigor Centre will be available from 4pm with the show to commence at 6pm. Food and drinks will be available on-site.

Tickets for the show are $12.50 each or $40 for a group of four (family or friends). Tickets are available from https://heritage.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Programs-and-Events/A-Christmas-Carol
