Expressions of Interest are now open for the inaugural Child Advocate, a new role that will strengthen oversight of child safety and provide independent advocacy for children and young people, particularly those in out-of-home care and youth justice systems.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Corrections and Rehabilitation, Guy Barnett, said the Child Advocate is a new position and is one of three roles that will lead the new Commission for Children and Young People, as recommended by the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings.
“Keeping Tasmanian children and young people safe is a top priority of our Government,” the Attorney-General said.
“We are continuing to strengthen Tasmania’s child safety system and ensure children and young people have a strong voice in decisions that affect them.
“This role ensures that children’s rights, wellbeing and interests are upheld through individual advocacy, complaint resolution and systemic improvement.
“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we are building a safer, stronger and more supportive Tasmania where children and young people are protected, heard and have the opportunity to thrive.”
Tasmanians aged between 15-21 will help form a Youth Selection Panel, to help determine who the new Child Advocate will be.
The Youth Selection Panel will work alongside a senior selection panel providing a unique opportunity for young Tasmanians to decide who will champion their rights, safety and wellbeing.
