Expressions of Interest are now open for the appointment of Tasmania’s next Director of Public Prosecutions.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Corrections and Rehabilitation, Guy Barnett, said the recruitment process would ensure Tasmania continues to benefit from strong, independent leadership of one of the State’s most important statutory offices.
“The Director of Public Prosecutions plays a vital role in Tasmania’s justice system, making independent decisions about the prosecution of serious criminal matters and conducting prosecutions on behalf of the State,” the Attorney-General said.
“The DPP helps maintain public confidence in the administration of justice by ensuring prosecutorial decisions are made fairly, impartially and independently.”
The expression of interest process has been initiated ahead of Daryl Coates’ current term as Director of Public Prosecutions ending on 31 May 2027.
“Mr Coates has made a significant contribution to Tasmania since his appointment in 2013, and I thank him for his longstanding service and contribution to the administration of justice in our State,” the Attorney-General said.
“I encourage highly experienced members of the legal profession who have the expertise, judgement and leadership required for this important office to consider putting their name forward.”
Eligible applicants must be Australian lawyers with at least seven years’ standing as practitioners.
The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate extensive criminal law expertise, outstanding advocacy and communication skills, sound judgement and the capacity to lead a high-performing legal office.
Expressions of interest are now open and will close on Friday 30 October 2026.
