Family and neighbors arrest Horsham burglar

Three family members and two neighbors have arrested a man following an aggravated burglary in Horsham overnight.

The incident happened in McCombe Court when the man allegedly broke into a garage before 1am.

The occupants of the house heard noises coming from the garage after the man broke into a gun safe and removed a firearm.

A 19-year-old victim, who resided at the address, entered the garage and was threatened by the man before the burglar ran from the garage.

The victim, who was joined by his brother, followed the burglar from the house and tackled him to the ground in front of the house.

A third man came to their assistance as the struggle continued on the lawn.

Two neighbors, from across the court, heard the commotion and also came out to assist in the arrest, restraining the man until police arrived.

One of the neighbors, a 48-year-old man, was conveyed to hospital after allegedly being struck with a pair of scissors in the altercation on the lawn.

A 20-year-old Horsham man has been charged with threats to kill, conduct endangering life, theft and aggravated burglary.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at the Ararat Magistrates’ Court on Monday 30 September.
