Fatal crash cuts power to Maclean, NSW

Hundreds of people were without power for several hours overnight after a single-vehicle crash at Maclean, north of Grafton, overnight.

A man was the driver and only person in a station wagon which was travelling west along River Street about 6.30pm (Sunday 4 August 2019), when it left the road, hit a parked truck, then continued a further 35m and hit a power pole, snapping it in two.

Electricity to the area was immediately cut.

Officers from Coffs/Clarence Police District arrived on scene within minutes; however, the driver had suffered critical head injuries and died at the scene.

It was a further six hours before the scene could be released to energy providers who worked to replace the pole and power lines.

At this time the driver has not been formally identified; however, it is believed he is a 47-year-old man from the Northern Rivers area.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
