Council’s annual Father’s Day Memorial returns to Belgian Gardens Cemetery tomorrow, offering residents a chance to reflect, remember and connect with others who have experienced loss and grief.
The commemorative event, taking place from 8:30am to 10am, will feature live local music, moments for quiet reflection, mindful craft activities and access to wellbeing information and support on site.
Attendees are invited to select and share a poem in memory of their loved one, either by reading it themselves or having it shared on their behalf by Council event staff.
A free barbecue breakfast and coffee will be provided, alongside giveaway native plants that attendees may like to take home and plant in memory of their loved one.
Division 8 Councillor Andrew Robinson said the annual occasion was a meaningful way for the community to connect ahead of Father’s Day.
“Occasions like Father’s Day are a wonderful chance to celebrate the dads and the father figures in our lives, however, for those of us who have sadly experienced loss, the day can come with some difficult emotions,” Cr Robinson said.
“This event acknowledges that special days like this can be difficult for some, and creates a space where the community can come together to support each other.
“The Father’s Day Memorial service also provides an important opportunity for those who have lost a father, but may not have any grave, a site where they can reflect.
“In my own case, my father ashes are floating out at sea, hopefully to one day land back in Hartlepool in England where he was from.
“It is also a very inclusive event so no matter who you are, or what kind of loss you have experienced, you are welcome to come along and take some time to pause, reflect and connect with other members of the community.”
