FDI World Dental Federation places focus on global periodontal health

The FDI World Dental Federation has released a presentation that aims to raise awareness of the effects of untreated periodontal disease.

Based on its White Paper on Prevention and Management of Periodontal Diseases for Oral Health and General Health, the slide presentation highlights how largely preventable oral diseases places a significant burden on many countries throughout the world.

According to FDI, “around 50% of the global adult population is affected by periodontal disease”, which can not only cause tooth loss but is recognised to be associated with diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

In a bid to educate oral health professionals across the world on the health dangers posed by periodontal disease, FDI has produced the presentation which “provide oral health professionals with a comprehensive summary of the main issues related to the global prevalence and impact, aetiology and pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases.”

Additionally, “it also identifies the key challenges in tackling the burden of periodontal diseases and provides an action plan for oral health professionals, policymakers, and other related actors.”
