The Liberal National Government is investing $300,000 to support drug and alcohol services in Goulburn Valley.

The Cottage, will receive Government funding over three years commencing in 2019/20 to support their rehabilitation programs.

The Cottage is a privately funded not-for-profit organisation which treats both men and women for all forms of substance dependency in a secure and stable residential environment.

Minister for Health, Greg Hunt said the Government is committed to supporting Australian communities in their fight against substance abuse.

“We continue to invest strongly in drug and alcohol services in Victoria,” Minister Hunt said.

“Alcohol and drug misuse affects not just the individuals involved, but the people and communities around them.”

“Rehabilitation services are crucial to enable people with substance problems to get their lives back on track.”

The Cottage residents have an average stay of 53 days, and are linked with a range of other local health services. Federal Member for Murray, Damian Drum welcomed the announcement and said he will continue to work with those in the community who are affected by substance abuse.

“So many families in the Goulburn Valley are dealing with the scourge of drug and alcohol addiction, and are feeling helpless in the plight of their family member of friend,” Mr Drum said. “The Cottage and its unique approach is proving to be a successful step on the way back to rehabilitation for many of the afflicted, the positive effects of which will be felt across the community.”

“Now that this significant amount of funding has been secured, The Cottage can continue to deliver programs that assist those with substance abuse challenges,” Mr Drum said.

These latest initiatives continue the Government’s unprecedented investment in drug and alcohol treatment services, with an estimated $720 million over four years.

The Government’s strong economic management ensures the continued record investment of funding into vital health initiatives including mental health, life-saving medicines, Medicare and hospitals.
