Female friendly upgrades for Richards Reserve pavilion

5 March 2020

Coburg North’s Richards Reserve sports pavilion is gearing up for the future with works to make the facility more inclusive and accessible for everyone starting in early March.

The works will include female friendly change rooms and amenities, an upgrade of the kitchen and bike storage and an accessible toilet.

Moreland Mayor Cr Lambros Tapinos said the upgrade is part of Council’s commitment towards ensuring all residents feel included in sports and can access sporting facilities across Moreland.

“It’s fantastic that women and girls in Moreland are increasing their participation in sport,” said Cr Tapinos.

“Moreland Council has long championed female participation in sport and I’m very pleased that we are creating female friendly sporting facilities at Richards Reserve.”

Female sports participation across the municipality increased from 8% in 2008 to 23% in 2018 as a result of Council’s Allocation of Sporting Grounds and Pavilions Policy that requires clubs to field a junior team and have female participation to have access to a ground and pavilion.

Located at 30-34 Charles Street, the facility is currently home to Coburg Cycling Club and the Pascoe Vale Soccer Club.

The refurbishment works are expected to be completed by June 2020.

The upgrades at Richards Reserve pavilion follows the completion of female friendly change rooms at Reddish Reserve in Hadfield in February. Works are also planned for City Oval, Cole Reserve and Gillion Oval later in the year.

Moreland Council encourages equal participation in sport and physical activity and is committed to providing a variety of high quality, aquatic, leisure and sporting facilities to meet community needs.
