Festival of film will have movie buffs buzzing

Cairns’ most-loved short film festival is back and better than ever.

Understory Film Festival has grown in 2022, with eight events planned over two weekends at two venues – Tanks Arts Centre and Munro Martin Parklands – on 18-19 November and 25-26 November.

Tickets are now on sale via Ticketlink for events in this year’s programme, including the ninth edition of the Understory Film Festival official awards presentation on Saturday, 26 November, starting at 6pm at Munro Martin Parklands.

During Understory Film Festival, which includes premiere screenings, forums, masterclasses and red-carpet events, residents can immerse themselves in the local film scene and learn from established and acclaimed Australian filmmakers.

Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said Understory Film Festival was a staple of the cultural landscape in Cairns.

“Understory Film Festival gives local filmmakers the chance to be recognised and share their works with a large and appreciative Cairns audience,” Cr Manning said.

“Munro Martin Parklands is the perfect setting to showcase these high-quality locally produced short films, and the new events in this year’s expanded program will provide even greater opportunities for our growing film industry to come together.”

During the festival, a curated program of longer films produced in the region or by filmmakers from the region will be presented.

Screenings:

  • Starspawn: Overture and Landfall by local indie filmmaker, Travis Bain
  • Geoff Dixon: Portraits of Us – the FNQ premiere of the feature documentary of local artist Geoff Dixon by Gogo Media
  • Do’s and Don’ts of Dating and the Do’s and Don’ts of Getting Married, two award-winning short films made by the ARC Creative Ensemble.

This year’s Understory Festival will feature more than just the screening of short films; it will also provide opportunities for meaningful engagement with the region’s creatives, including an open forum presented by Screenworks in collaboration with Screen Queensland, masterclasses with renowned producers and directors Molly Reynold and Rolf de Heer, and Q&A sessions with the filmmakers.
