Fire Prevention Inspections

The Moira Shire Council has begun its annual Fire Prevention inspections throughout the shire.

Council officers will inspect township areas and will respond to complaints to identify fire hazards on properties.

Landowners will receive a Fire Prevention Notice which they must comply with by slashing blocks, creating firebreaks, clearing undergrowth and removing flammable materials from their land.

There are significant penalties for failing to comply with a Fire Prevention Notice, owners can be issued an infringement of $1923 of fined up to $23,077 or imprisoned for 12 months at the magistrates’ court.

This is also a timely reminder to all resident to take action in preparing their properties for what is predicted to be a very hot and dry summer.

Simple things like cleaning gutters, keeping lawns short and gardens maintained, cutting back trees and shrubs overhanging buildings and cleaning up fallen branches and debris will all help in reducing the fire hazard risk to your property.
