Flag raising to celebrate start of NAIDOC Week celebrations

The City of Greater Bendigo will kick off 2019 NAIDOC Week celebrations with a civic reception and flag-raising ceremony at 10am Monday July 8 in the Bendigo Library Gardens Hargreaves Street.

The ceremony will include an official flag raising, local guest speakers and musical performances, as well as a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by Trent Nelson and Rodney Carter of the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year NAIDOC Week is being held from Sunday July 7 to Sunday July 14.

The NAIDOC Week theme for 2019 is Voice. Treaty. Truth. This theme encourages all Australians to walk with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples towards a better and shared future, and acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples want their voices to be heard and have always wanted an enhanced role in decision-making in Australia’s democracy.
