Flooding – Gilwi and Myatt outstations – Victoria River

Northern Territory Police and Local Emergency Committee members are responding to a significant flooding event at Gilwi and Myatt outstations on the Victoria Highway near Timber Creek as a result of significant rainfall in the area.

Several calls for assistance were received by the Joint Emergency Services Communications Centre from outstation residents reporting that flood water was encroaching on houses and some community members were stranded in a vehicle on an access road.

Timber Creek Police and a local ranger responded, assisting a number of residents to traverse flooded roadways and get to safe shelter at Timber Creek.

Incident Controller Kylie Anderson said “The responding members did good work in difficult conditions, which included carrying an elderly resident 200 metres through floodwaters to get her to higher ground. The Local Emergency Committee will continue to monitor conditions on the ground and respond accordingly until weather conditions ease.”

The Victoria Highway is currently impassable from Timber Creek to the WA border.
