Football Australia has confirmed that its base national component of the player registration fee will remain frozen for the 2027 season, with the 2027 PlayFootball registration window opening this week.
In a move to increase pricing transparency and proactively comply with the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) upcoming reforms banning online card surcharging, Football Australia has decided to abolish the separate 1.98% service fee.
From 2027, the frozen base fee and the average 1.98% service fee per category will be consolidated into a single, transparent upfront payment known as the National Football Development Contribution (NFDC).
Previously, participants paid the base National Registration Fee (NRF) and were then charged a separate 1.98% Service Fee applied to the total player registration fee at the PlayFootball checkout to cover payment processing fees and platform support costs.
Moving forward, these have been consolidated into a single upfront fee.
Football Australia Chief Executive Officer, Martin Kugeler, said the decision prioritises the grassroots football community during a period of broader economic pressure.
“Grassroots football is the heartbeat for football in Australia. We are proud to be the largest participation sport in Australia and continue to grow.
“We decided not to increase our Football Australia’s part of the registration fees in 2027 despite the increasing costs and continued investment across the game, including new Youth National Teams, strengthened player development pathways, increased grassroots support, and ongoing improvements to coach and referee education.
“While keeping FA’s total share of the 2027 registration fee stable, by consolidating our legacy platform checkout charges into the single NFDC, we are providing total transparency for our participants and addressing the upcoming RBA reforms.”
How are Player Registration Fees distributed nationally?
As Australia’s largest participation sport, football structures differ nationally. However, Football Australia’s national contribution remains a minor fraction of the total player registration fee.
Recent national data analysis shows that 88% of Player Registration Fee revenue remains strictly with local Clubs (48%), Associations/Member Zones (17%), and State/Territory Member Federations (23%). This vital local funding covers competition management, development programs for clubs, coaches and referees, pitch hire, advocacy for facilities, match kits, referee match fees, and a comprehensive insurance program.
Football Australia accounts for just 12% of the overall player registration fee revenue nationally.
Football Australia Executive Director of Football, Heather Garriock, said the transition to the NFDC provides improved clarity on how this 12% is reinvested back into football ecosystem.
“The Player Registration Fee contributes to the essential costs required for a player to be officially registered and able to participate in sanctioned football,” Garriock said.
“The NFDC is a direct investment into the Australian football ecosystem. It supports better coaches, more referees, enhanced player pathways, and vital support for local clubs.”
Specifically, the NFDC strictly supports Football Australia’s national responsibilities, which include:
- Junior National Teams: Funding Junior and National Futsal teams for men and women.
- National Championships: Delivery costs for the Emerging Matildas, Emerging Socceroos, Para Football, and Futsal.
- Grassroots Development: Funding Club Changer, Football Australia’s National Club Development Program, alongside participation and amateur resources.
- Safety & Integrity: Development, maintenance, and enforcement of the Member Protection Framework (MPF) to safeguard the dignity and inclusion of all participants.
- Education: Systems that support entry-level coaching and referee accreditation and development.
- Digital Infrastructure: Maintenance and provision of the National Online Registration System (PlayFootball) and Competition Management System.
The NFDC will be implemented in PlayFootball for the relevant 2027 registration windows as they open, commencing with Professional Women on 29 September 2026, National Premier Leagues on 1 December 2026, and Community Football on 1 January 2027.
