From Wodonga’s Australia Day ceremony to Clean Up Australia Day, if it’s a council event then you can bet Gary Anglin is most likely there.
The Wodonga retiree has notched up 16 continuous years of volunteer work with Wodonga Council and doesn’t plan to stop any time soon.
“I will keep volunteering as long as my health allows me,” he said.
Mr Anglin volunteers alongside his wife, Trudi.
The couple first started volunteering at the former council event, Carnivale, but both agree that Australia Day is their favourite event.
While COVID has moved the Australia Day event online for the past two years, Mr Anglin had attended every year since he started volunteering with council.
“Volunteering has been a great experience for me and very rewarding,” Mr Anglin said.
“I have missed our Australia Day event at Les Stone Park. Let’s hope we are back there next year.
“The people attending are happy to be there and the atmosphere is just fantastic.
“The event has grown over the years and council put on a great event.”
Mr Anglin encourages others with spare time to consider volunteering with Wodonga Council or within the wider community.
“It is difficult for clubs and organisations to keep going without volunteers,” he said.
Mr Anglin reflected back on his time at the Bonegilla Migrant Centre where he undertook maintenance work.
“I really enjoyed it out there, listening to the history and people’s stories,” he said.
“I was there once a week where I would carry out maintenance work but that stopped about five years ago.”
