Four drivers arrested as Barrier PD launches Operation Stay Alert, NSW

With Operation Stay Alert underway, officers on the state’s Far West have this week arrested four local drivers who allegedly failed random breath and/or drug tests.

Officers attached to Barrier Police District attended the scene of a single-vehicle crash on the Silver City Highway, Coomealla, about 8.10pm on Wednesday (3 June 2020), and arrested the 77-year-old male driver after he returned a positive roadside breath test.

He was taken to Dareton Police Station where a breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.144. He was charged with mid-range drink driving and is due to appear in a Wentworth Local Court on Tuesday 8 September 2020.

Barrier Police District Crime Manger, Detective Acting Inspector Tom Aylett said, with Operation Stay Alert commencing this morning, police will be out in force and targeting dangerous driver behaviour.

“If you drink and drive, expect to be caught and have your licence suspended immediately,” he said.

Details of the other incidents are:

  • A 26-year-old man was stopped about 12am on Thursday (4 June 2020) by police on Woore Street, Wilcannia, due to his manner of driving. The man was subjected to a random breath test and returned a positive result. He was arrested and taken to Wilcannia Police Station where a breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.182. He was charged with high-range PCA and is due to appear at Wilcannia Local Court on Monday 27 July 2020.
  • A man has been charged after he drove through a fence and hit a parked car on Tapio Street, Dareton, about 1.50am yesterday (Thursday 4 June 2020). Police arrested the 24-year-old Dareton man after he returned a positive roadside breath test. The man was taken to Dareton Police Station where a breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.182. He’s been charged with attempt to drive with high-range PCA, drive while licence expired, drive unregistered vehicle, and use uninsured motor vehicle. He’s due to appear in Wentworth Local Court on Tuesday 6 October 2020.
  • A 54-year-old man was arrested after he returned a positive roadside drug test about 10.10pm on Wednesday (3 June 2020) on Williams Street, Broken Hill. He was arrested and taken to Broken Hill Police Station for a subsequent which also returned a positive result. He was given a 24-hour prohibition notice from driving.

Operation Stay Alert runs from midnight (Friday 5 June 2020) to 11.59pm on Monday (8 June 2020), with officers out in force targeting speeding, drink and drug driving, driving while fatigued, mobile phone, helmet and other traffic offences.
