Four-weekly glass collections to support a more efficient service

Yarra City Council

To deliver a more efficient and cost-effective service that reflects our residents’ needs, Yarra’s glass recycling service will move from fortnightly collection to every four weeks.

Of those who responded as part of our community consultation, approximately two-thirds of people (67%) said their glass bin was collected too often or was not full on collection day. Waste audits also found glass bins were, on average, only around one-third full when collected.

Moving to a four-weekly collection schedule will reduce collection vehicle trips, allowing us to direct resources where they are needed most.

Residents can also use Yarra’s new and improved online bin lookup tool to check upcoming collection dates. Simply enter your address to see which bin is being collected and when.

Glass recycling remains an important part of Yarra’s four-bin waste and recycling system. Victoria’s standardised four-stream waste and recycling system is a State Government requirement. It provides separate services for glass recycling, food and garden organics, mixed recycling and general rubbish.

Keeping glass separate from other recyclables helps produce cleaner, higher-quality recycled materials and supports a more sustainable waste system.
