The Australian Government has commenced the fourth statutory review of the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme and the WELS Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA).
The review will be undertaken by Grosvenor, with the final report expected to be delivered in March 2027.
The WELS scheme is reviewed every 5 years to make sure it is delivering value and helping Australians use water more efficiently.
The review will look at:
- what is working well
- the benefits of the scheme
- areas for improvement
- ways to help reduce water use across Australia
- whether the WELS Intergovernmental Agreement is still meeting its purpose.
Public consultation with industry, consumer groups, state and territory governments, and other interested stakeholders is expected to occur throughout October and November.
A discussion paper and opportunities to provide feedback will be published on the Water Rating website. The final report will be published on the website after it is tabled in Parliament.
