Free community event to inspire R U OK? conversations

R U OK Day

Hobsons Bay residents are invited to a morning of activities, food and information as part of R U OK? Day.

The community can join a free morning tea at Laverton Community Hub on Thursday 8 September 2022 between 10.30am-11am to learn about activities to reduce stress and find out about local services that can improve mental health and wellbeing.

R U OK? Day is a national day of action to inspire the community to start meaningful conversations whenever they spot signs someone they care about might be struggling.

The morning tea at Laverton Community Hub will include a drumming performance and class from Beat Factor Group, sausage sizzle, spinal health check, yoga, massage, book corner, Henna (temporary tattoo art), Crokinole board games, job help and support from youth counsellors.

Wetlands Ward councillor Matt Tyler said R U OK? Day should inspire everyone to take action.

“R U OK? Day is a great annual reminder to us all about having those conversations as soon as we notice someone might be struggling and could benefit from a check-in with a friend, colleague or loved one,” Cr Tyler said.

“But we shouldn’t just be having these conversations on R U OK? Day, we should be having them all year round. Asking ‘are you OK?’ is a simple question, and it could start a crucial conversation that could have a huge impact on someone’s life.

“This morning tea will provide an opportunity to learn more about how to reduce stress – whether that’s through activities you can do yourself or working with a local service to give you the advice you need to improve your life.”
