Are you caring for a loved one who is living with dementia? Dementia Australia is holding a family carer education program for residents living in the Lower Yorke Peninsula region.
There are estimated to be more than 36,800 people living with dementia in South Australia. Without a medical breakthrough, the number of people in South Australia living with dementia is expected to increase to an estimated 73,000 people by 2058.
Dementia Australia’s Family Carer Program provides an opportunity to learn about practical strategies, share common experiences and learn ways to support a person with a diagnosis of dementia living in the community.
Family members and friends attend a three-hour session over four consecutive weeks. It will run from Wednesday 20 March – Wednesday 10 April (four consecutive Wednesdays) from 10am – 1pm. Topics include:
• Understanding dementia
• Understanding changed responses
• Effective communication
• Looking after yourself
• Future planning and legal issues
• Support and services available
Dementia Australia’s Family Carer Program, to be held at the Minlaton Community Health Centre, is suitable for family and friends of a person with a diagnosis of dementia.
Courses also provide carers with an opportunity to meet with others who are sharing a similar experience, allowing time to socialise and share important links to local support services that support carer well-being.
