The Cook Labor Government’s repel, prevent, protect initiative has rolled out State-wide, with Perth metropolitan community organisations and local governments now eligible for free mosquito repellent dispensers.
This builds on the successful installation of repellent dispenser stations throughout regional areas across Western Australia.
By increasing access to free mosquito repellent, the Cook Labor Government is aiming to drive down the risk of mosquito-borne viruses and protect Western Australians.
Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus are the most common disease-causing viruses spread by mosquitoes in the metropolitan area.
Both viruses can cause a number of debilitating symptoms including joint pain, fever, and rash.
Community organisations in eligible areas can apply for up to two free repellent dispensers through the WA Health Repellent dispenser community initiative .
Distribution of the repellent stations is prioritised where there is significant mosquito activity.
People living near water in the metropolitan area are encouraged to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites by wearing long, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing, and applying an effective insect repellent.
As stated by Preventative Health Minister Meredith Hammat:
“The only way to avoid contracting mosquito-borne diseases is to avoid getting bitten.
“Expanding this program to the metropolitan area ensures more communities have access to practical prevention measures where they are really needed.
“This is about making it easier for people to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites and therefore reducing disease risk, particularly in outdoor community places.”
