Free Movie Screening to Celebrate Harmony Day

Southern Grampians Shire Council invites all community members to join Harmony Day celebrations Monday 21 March 2022, with a free special screening of “The Hundred-Foot Journey” playing at the Hamilton Cinema.

Harmony Day is celebrated annually during Harmony Week (15 – 21 March) to promote inclusivity, respect and belonging for all Australian’s regardless of culture or background, united by common core values of what it means to be Australian.

2016 ABS Census reported nearly half or 49 per cent of Australians were either born overseas or have one parent who was which typifies the incredible diversity and multiculturalism within the nation.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Bruach Colliton said all community members are welcome to attend to celebrate Harmony Day within the Southern Grampians and share your story of origin with friends and family.

“Harmony Day is a special time of year for celebration and reflection where we are reminded the things that make us unique, contributes to the wonderful diversity of our region,” said Cr Colliton.

“We all have special stories of origin and how our family came to be here in Southern Grampians. Harmony Day provides us with an opportunity to reflect, share those stories and acknowledge the incredible diversity that makes us who we are.

“With turmoil currently playing out on the world stage partnered with our continuing recovery from the pandemic, it provides us with a real reminder to show tolerance, empathy and support within our community for those who may be different.

“Let’s get together to share our experiences, to learn from others and to continue to add to the amazing sense of community we are privileged to be a part of here in the Southern Grampians,” concluded Cr Colliton.

A free light supper will be provided at 6:00pm with the free screening beginning at 7:00pm. Residents are encouraged to bring family and friends to the Hamilton Cinema for a free, fun night out.

Spaces are limited, so please register today at www.sthgrampians.vic.gov.au/harmonyday. Please note attendees over the age of 18 will be required to show proof of vaccination to attend.

The Hundred-Foot Journey stars Helen Mirren, Om Puri, Manish Daval and Charlotte Le Bon, the movie adaption of author Richard C Morais fictional novel is a clash of cultures. Come and enjoy a celebration of triumph over exile as two worlds collide.
