Mildura Rural City Council residents will be able to take in one of two free community screenings of feature documentary Wash My Soul in the River’s Flow to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2022 next month.

Wash My Soul in the River’s Flow is a portrait of legendary First Nations singer-songwriters Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter and their 2004 concert Kura Tungar – Songs from the River.

It chronicles their time working with renowned Australian pianist and composer Paul Grabowski and the 22-piece Australian Art Orchestra (AAO) as part of the landmark 2004 concert.

Residents can take in a free screening of the documentary at the following locations:

In a review in The Age at the time, the concert was described as:

“….Kura Tungar is another triumphant collaboration for the AAO and the performance was met with a standing ovation by Sunday’s audience. Its creative and insightful combination of ideas and imagery – with the mesmerising, charismatic performances of Hunter and Roach at its core – provides a thought-provoking, deeply moving and ultimately celebratory exploration of home, spirit and the nature of identity.”

Councillor for Arts, Culture and Heritage Helen Healy said the free screenings would provide a chance for the community to gain a greater appreciation of not only the 2004 concert, but the First Nations artists that made it so special.

“This wonderful documentary offers a behind-the-scenes look at that iconic concert, using footage combining conversations, rehearsals and the opening night itself,” Cr Healy said.
