Free waterwise offers are available to residents of Karratha, Roebourne, Point Samson, Wickham, Onslow, Halls Creek, Fitzroy Crossing and Port Hedland as part of Water Corporation’s 2021-22 Waterwise Towns program.
This year’s program, which is being launched as part of National Water Week, saved 70 million litres of water in the North-West in 2020-21, and has been created to encourage water efficiency in regional Western Australia.
A free plumbing service is available to residents in participating towns, which will include a leak inspection and minor repairs, as well as upgrades to water-efficient fittings if required.
Residents in Port Hedland, Karratha, Roebourne, Point Samson and Wickham can also take advantage of Water Corporation’s Showerhead Swap program, which allows households to swap up to two old, water-guzzling showerheads with waterwise alternatives.
In 2020-21, the Showerhead Swap program alone saw 219 North-West households save
4.4 million litres of water – equivalent to 105 backyard swimming pools.
To promote water efficiency in the garden, residents in Onslow, Port Hedland, Karratha, Roebourne, Point Samson and Wickham can also apply for a free service from an irrigation specialist. This can include minor repairs to sprinkler systems and help with programming irrigation controllers.

Since 2013-14, the Waterwise Towns program has saved an estimated 1.58 billion litres of precious water across WA – equivalent to 702 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
As stated by Water Minister Dave Kelly:
“By providing waterwise support to homeowners in the North-West, the McGowan Government, through Water Corporation, is making it easier for residents to save water and lower household water bills.
“The 2020-21 program again saw local contractors engaged to carry out plumbing inspections, minor leak repairs and fixture upgrades, helping save a terrific 70 million litres of water in the region.
“National Water Week is a good time for us all to reflect on how we can save water, and the Waterwise Towns program is one way Water Corporation is equipping regional Western Australians with the tools they need to be as water efficient as possible.”
