Aspiring water industry trainees have gone behind the scenes at Steuart McIntyre Dam to explore the people, projects and career opportunities that help keep our community’s water services running.
Twelve participants, including four from the Kempsey, took part in the Indigenous Fresh Start Program. As part of the program, Kempsey Shire Council welcomed the group to the dam to learn more about careers in water operations and see the industry firsthand.
Participants toured Steuart McIntyre Dam and saw the new water treatment plant currently under construction, giving them a close-up look at one of the major water infrastructure projects taking shape in the Kempsey Shire.
The visit also gave participants the chance to connect what they had been learning during the program with a real-world water project and explore where a career in the industry could take them.
The two-week Indigenous Fresh Start Program is designed to introduce Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to careers in water operations and provide a pathway towards potential traineeship opportunities.
The program is delivered through the NSW Government’s Water Group in partnership with Aboriginal Affairs NSW and the NSW Water Directorate, with Kempsey Shire Council, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and MidCoast Council involved in its delivery.
