Usually, we turn on the tap without a second thought. But where does that water come from, where does it go, and what does it take to keep it flowing?
These are the questions behind three free community events hosted by Eurobodalla Council’s in October as a part of National Water Week. Council’s sustainability supervisor Alex says the events will lift the lid on the daily journey water takes through the shire, from river to tap.
“So often we take water for granted. It’s only when something goes wrong we stop to think about it but there’s a huge amount happening behind the scenes.,” says Ms King.
Council’s three-part program includes a free community movie night and discussion panel at Moruya’s Red Door Hall, from 6 to 9pm on Thursday 8 October.
“We’ll be screening Dam to Tap, filmed right here in Eurobodalla, followed by excerpts from a documentary looking at some of Australia’s magnificent river systems and exploring the interconnections to catchments from both European and First Nations perspectives,” Ms King says.
Members of the community keen to see the inner workings of the shire’s water system can book on to our special dam-to-tap tour, also on Thursday 8 October.
“We’ll load up our tour bus with participants from Moruya Library at 9am to visit Deep Creek Dam, the northern water treatment plant and the Moruya sewage treatment plant. There’ll be expert staff onboard and onsite to answer your questions about water supply, treatment and management,” Ms King says.
“Spaces are limited and bookings essential!”
Finally, Council’s water team will have a stall at the Moruya Markets, Riverside Park, from 8am to 12.30pm on Saturday 24 October. Ms King says it’s the perfect opportunity for residents to learn more about the shire’s water supply in a relaxed setting.
“It’s perfect if you have questions about our local water system, water security for home or shire, or you might be looking for career opportunities in the industry. Just roll up, any time that suits,” she says.
