The Marshall Liberal Government has announced eight country roads will be upgraded to enable the safe reinstatement of the 110 km/h speed limit, slashed by the former Labor government.
The Marshall Government will invest up to $70 million to upgrade these eight country roads to ensure they meet the appropriate safety standards.
Planning and design works will begin within the next month, with a tender for the procurement of works for the Carpenters Rocks Road upgrade to be released this month.
This investment forms part of the record $1.115 billion of funding announced in the 2019-20 State Budget to keep building regional roads and infrastructure.
The eight country roads which had speed limits slashed by the former Labor government and which will be reinstated under the Marshall Liberal Government include;
- Andamooka Road (Andamooka to Olympic Dam)
- Cleve Road (Cleve to Kimba)
- Goyder Highway (Crystal Brook to Gulnare)
- Riddoch Highway (Mt Gambier to Port MacDonnell)
- Ngarkat Highway (Pinnaroo to Bordertown)
- Browns Well Highway (Loxton to Pinnaroo)
- Clay Wells Road (Southern Ports Highway to Callendale)
- Carpenter Rocks Road (Carpenter Rocks to Mt Gambier)
“The Marshall Liberal Government is delivering on its election commitment to reinstate the 110 km/h speed limit on these eight country roads,” said Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll.
“We are continuing to build South Australia and have developed an $11.9 billion pipeline of infrastructure works over the next four years.
“In the most recent State Budget alone we announced a record $1.115 billion to build and upgrade regional roads and infrastructure.
“Regional South Australians use these roads every day as they go about their daily lives, so the condition and speed limits on these roads impact them every day.
“Country roads are crucial to building strong regional communities and growing regional economies.
“We’re investing the money necessary to make these roads safer which will enable the speed limit to be returned to 110 km/h.
“The former Labor government treated regional South Australians with the utmost contempt – Labor failed to invest in country roads and instead just slashed speed limits.
“Regional South Australians now have a Marshall Liberal Government that will put its money where its mouth is and invest in country roads.
“Where Labor failed to invest and instead cut speed limits, the Liberal government will invest in country roads and reinstate these speed limits.”
