Fund assists basketballers selected for national championships

Five Mount Gambier junior basketballers were recently awarded a $350 donation from the Junior Sports Assistance Fund to assist with travel and associated costs to participate in the 2019 Australian National Basketball Championships to be held in Darwin.

Jake Walker has been selected to compete in the South Australian under 16 boys team while Tara Bryant, Sarah Ritter, Alyssa Duncan and Rori Perryman will represent South Australia in the under 16 girls team.

“The Junior Sports Assistance Fund donation will help with travel expenses, including the cost of the Darwin tournament fees,” Alyssa Duncan said.

“I have been playing basketball for six years now and enjoy playing with friends and competing competitively. I look forward to playing at a high level in Darwin.”

The fund provides financial support for junior sports persons who have achieved state selection or higher in a specific sport.

“It is very expensive to compete at this level so any financial assistance is very helpful and very much appreciated,” Jake Walker said.

The Basketball Mount Gambier representatives have increased their training load, including multiple trips to Adelaide to train with other South Australian representatives in the lead up to the national event.

“The Junior Sports Assistance Fund donation has helped to pay towards extra training sessions prior to going away to Darwin,” Tara Bryant said.

“I’m working hard at trainings and doing extra so I can play at my best and be prepared for the week away.”
