A $200 million project will strengthen the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass in the Blue Mountains
The Australian Government will invest $100 million to rebuild and strengthen the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass.
The funding matches the NSW Government’s $100 million commitment in the 2026-27 NSW State Budget, bringing the total project budget to $200 million.
The project will rebuild Mitchell’s Causeway and add an eastbound climbing lane. The new lane will help drivers safely overtake slower vehicles and trucks on this important route between the Blue Mountains and Central West.
Mitchell’s Causeway and Victoria Pass closed in March 2026 after serious cracking and movement. Transport for NSW has investigated the failure and designed a permanent engineering solution to safely reopen the highway.
In June 2026, the NSW Government entered an alliance contract with Seymour Whyte to build a new road deck above the existing Causeway. Piles anchored to the bedrock below will support the new structure.
More than 150 workers have been inducted to deliver the project.
The Great Western Highway is expected to reopen to vehicles in the second quarter of 2027.
