Funding for trainees in regional communities

The McGowan Government has awarded $1.53 million to boost workforce skills and build jobs by supporting trainees across regional communities.

The Regional Traineeship Program supports Community Resource Centres (CRCs) and local government authorities to facilitate vocational education training in their area.

Grants of up to $30,000 have been awarded to 51 CRCs and local government authorities, from Esperance to Halls Creek, to support local training, skills and employment opportunities.

Grants from the round include traineeships in business administration, hospitality, tourism, community services, early childcare, information technology, events management, local government, graphic design, information and cultural services, marketing and horticulture.

Funds are allocated through a competitive process managed by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.

As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

“The Regional Traineeship Program helps CRCs and local governments to connect people wanting to learn new skills or embark on a new career with local businesses and organisations.

“The program provides for training, skills and employment opportunities for people living in the regions, with the aim of encouraging them to stay and work in their local community.

“Individual trainees will also be able to gain skills and experiences working in areas outside of their primary work placement: for example, an events management trainee may also work with the local visitor centre, shire or theatre group to boost their learning experience.

“The flexibility of the Regional Traineeship Program encourages employers and trainees to move away from the traditional business traineeships and encourages traineeships in vocations that better suit the needs of our regional communities.”
