Funding received for Shetland Heights Road upgrade

Bass Coast Shire Council is continuing to improve its local road network, with the sealing of Shetland Heights Road in San Remo, between Penniwells Drive and Potters Hill Road.

This $1.85 million project was made possible through the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. This program supports local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia, supporting jobs and the resilience of local economies to help communities bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The design process, including costings, for this project will be completed in the coming months. Once this is finalised, construction will begin, which is expected to be completed by 30 June, 2023.

The project will include the installation of new pavement and sealing of the road, a new concrete footpath as well as the installation of kerb and channel at selected locations and associated drainage.

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Michael Whelan said that this project will help improve access to the new campus of the Bass Coast College, which opened earlier in the year.

“Council has been investigating a road and drainage upgrade for Shetland Heights Road since 2019, which included the consideration of a Special Charge Scheme,” Cr Whelan said.

“However, since then the new school was announced and Australian Government funding became available, which means that we can get on with the project without the implementation of a Special Charge Scheme.

“Now that the school has opened, we want to have Shetland Heights Road constructed as soon as practically possible,” Cr Whelan concluded.

Federal Member for Monash Russell Broadbent said the funding reflects Council’s top priorities and will ensure the needs of our local communities are met.

“With the challenges presented by COVID-19, bushfires, floods and other events, the past couple of years have been tough for communities, businesses and local councils,” Mr Broadbent said.

“That’s why we have moved quickly to approve funding for the $1.85 million Shetland Heights Road upgrade paving the way for shovels to hit the dirt to make this project a reality.

“This will provide a vital boost for our local communities, backing local jobs and economic growth while delivering lasting upgrades that will benefit residents for years to come.”
