Funds available to invigorate town centres and nurture nature

Port Stephen

Port Stephens Council is calling on local creatives, businesses, community groups and organisations to apply for funding for projects that bring local ideas to life.

Applications are now open for the Vibrant Spaces Fund, with up to $20,000 available per project, and the Environmental Projects Fund, with up to $5,000 available per project.

Port Stephens Mayor Anderson said the funding programs facilitate community-led projects and achieve outcomes that improve our local spaces.

“These funds give locals the support they need to create or contribute to vibrant public spaces, protect the environment, and ultimately improve wellbeing and liveability in Port Stephens,” Mayor Anderson said.

“The Vibrant Spaces Fund is about creating places that tell our stories and reflect what makes each of our communities unique. If you’re passionate about protecting our natural environment, the Environmental Projects Fund is a great opportunity to turn your passion for our natural environment into action,” Mayor Anderson added.

The Vibrant Spaces Fund supports lasting placemaking projects that improve public spaces while expressing the identity and stories that make each Port Stephens community unique. The fund supports structural and creative improvements to public areas, including community beautification projects, public art, creative lighting, historical, interactive or storytelling experiences.

Projects are encouraged to demonstrate a collaborative approach that brings together local businesses, community organisations, residents, industry groups, or other partners to deliver clear benefits, such as increased visitation, foot traffic, or trade for local businesses.

The Environmental Projects Fund targets local sustainability initiatives. With a total pool of $20,000, and between $1,000 and $5,000 available per application, it supports projects that improve biodiversity, reduce Port Stephens’ carbon footprint, and protect native ecosystems.

Mayor Anderson highlighted the positive impact from projects delivered in previous funding rounds.

“It’s been fantastic to see how previous fund recipients have created lasting benefits across Port Stephens. If you have an idea you want to bring to life, I encourage you to apply,” Mayor Anderson said.

“The application process is easy, and if you need help, the team is always available to guide you through it,” Mayor Anderson added.

Applications for the Environmental Projects Fund close on 30 September 2026. Applications for the Vibrant Spaces Fund will close on 31 October 2026.

These funds are part of a broader year-round Community Funding Program, which includes the Community Event Development Fund, the Sporting Excellence Fund, the Major Event Sponsorship Fund, and the Placemaking Fund.
