Further charges laid after fatal Monterey crash

A man will appear in court today, one of two further people charged following investigations into a fatal crash at Monterey last month.

About 10pm on Friday 25 August 2023, emergency services were called to The Grand Parade, Monterey, after a Subaru Impreza sedan left the road and crashed into a tree.

Two passengers – boys, aged 10 and nine – were taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick where they died.

A third passenger – a nine-year-old girl – was taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver, a 33-year-old man, was taken to St George Hospital under police guard for his injuries.

Officers from St George Police Area Command, assisted by police from multiple neighbouring commands attended the scene and officers from the Crash Investigation Unit commenced an investigation under Strike Force Brigid.

Following inquires, investigators charged the 33-year-old man, and he remains before the courts.

Following extensive investigations, police will allege the Subaru Impreza was involved in a street race with a silver Audi A4 prior to the Subaru driver losing control and crossing to the incorrect side of the road before the impact.

As part of inquiries, investigators attended a home at Roselands about 10.30am yesterday (Wednesday 20 September 2023) and seized an Audi A4. The vehicle will undergo forensic examination.

About 3.30pm, a 24-year-old man was arrested after attending Campsie Police Station.

He was charged with two counts of aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death, organise, promote etc race between vehicles, and two counts of fail to stop and render assistance after impact causing death.

The Roselands man was refused bail to appear before Bankstown Local Court today (Thursday 21 September 2023). His licence was also suspended.

A 24-year-old woman, alleged to be the passenger of the Audi at the time, was arrested at an Arncliffe home about 5pm.

She was taken to Kogarah Police Station and charged with conceal serious indictable offence.

The woman was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday 17 October 2023.
